On a walking safari many opportunities arise to view big game, but the main focus is on the little, often overlooked aspects of the bush, such as tracks, plants, insects etc. A walking safari is an awakening of all the senses. You are part of the environment; not merely a spectator, as you would be on a drive. Your guide is Darran Myers. Darran has been guiding for 16 years and holds level 3 SKS DA qualifications (the highest qualification a nature guide can obtain) plus level 2 tracker. He is also an assessor and trainer for FGASA. The Luangwa Valley in eastern Zambia hosts an abundance of wildlife in unspoiled wilderness. Here, in one of Africa’s prime safari destinations, you have unique opportunities to walk in pristine wild areas and enjoy the spectacular landscapes. There are large herds of elephant and buffalo, as well as many antelope species, including the endangered Roan and Sable antelope and healthy populations of lion, leopard and hyena. The Luangwa River is teeming with hippos and crocodiles and there is an abundance of birdlife. Walking safaris are also done in Kafue National Park, which is Zambia’s oldest park and by far the largest. Habitats are diverse and include floodplains and woodland. It has a good concentration of plains game and predators. Rare animals such as Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, Roan antelope and oribi are also found here and there are 491 species of birds. Safaris are conducted in Zambia from May to October. |
